Communities are a collective cognitive construction that helps circulate social learning within and between organizations. Throughout these interactions between individuals and communities, knowledge is shared, leading to an increase in the innovation capabilities of an organization. However, benefitting from the possibilities offered by communities, means utilizing adequate management methods and a certain degree of organizational skills, which is not a given for everyone. Organizations with successful community management practices have mastered the art of creating a suitable environment to enable the emergence of these communities, without over-controlling and risking the loss of proper social dynamics.

The aim of this masterclass is to present companies with operational practices to manage communities in order to increase their innovation capabilities.

  • Etienne Wenger, pioneer on the topic, will present an overview of his experience studying communities in various organizations.
  • Ed Hoffman will share the approach NASA implemented for its communities of practice.
  • Various participants will be invited to present their experiences managing communities in organizations during a workshop
  • The workshop will then conclude with an overview of the “do’s and don’ts” regarding communities and how they can successfully help organizations become more innovative.
