In recent decades, in the innovation field, there has been a huge interest in the use of external sources of ideas to increase companies’ innovativeness. However, emerging work, such as the employee-driven innovation literature (EDI) has recently refocused attention on endogenous and internal sources of innovation. EDI asks for the contribution of ordinary employees, at all levels of the organization, beyond the boundaries of their primary job responsibilities. This idea of distributed responsibility for innovation requires new routines, new organizational objectives, and particularly new leadership practices. The literature on EDI is still at its infancy and little has been said about leadership in this kind of initiatives. We conducted multiple case studies, involving five companies that are currently using EDI, to understand how to lead these practices. Our results show that plural leadership is involved in EDI, since both managers and employees underline the presence of multiple leaders, multiple leadership behaviors, and leadership as a dynamic process that unfolds over time.

Nicole Flocco is a PhD Candidate in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. Her research interests lie at the intersection of leadership and innovation. In particular, she is exploring the role of formal and informal leaders in fostering innovation, investigating emergent innovation practices that involve employees (i.e. hackathons, internal crowdsourcing, contests, innovation time-off policy etc.).
