How are breakthrough innovations generated? Can we repeat an innovation? How do innovators think? How can we organize innovation activity within a large group or a small structure ? After telling us the unknown story of the Swatch watch in their 2012 book, Gilles Garel and Elmar Mock continue their analysis of design methods for innovation in the 2nd edition of their book: “The Innovation Factory – Taking the Plunge” (CRC Press, 2016).
Gilles Garel is a Full Chair Professor of Innovation Management at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (Cnam), Paris, and Professor at l’École polytechnique in the innovation management and entrepreneurship department. As a researcher at Lirsa (Cnam), he focuses on innovation management and design directly related to businesses and innovating organizations in varied sectors.
Elmar Mock is an engineer of chronometers and plastic material. At the age of 26, he, along with Jacques Müller, invented the Swatch. He subsequently conceived the Rockwatch for Tissot before leaving the watch industry. In 1986 he founded his own company, Creaholic, in Bienne, Switzerland, which he still runs. Mock has filed over 300 patents in diverse areas. In 2009 he was part of the “forum of 100 personalities of French-speaking Switzerland,” compiled each year by the monthly magazine L’Hebdo. In 2010 he won the Gaïa Prize.
