Measuring product innovation: A data mining approach

Summary: We propose a new output-based approach to measure innovation in goods and services. This approach draws on formal context and concept analysis, a relatively recent mathematical field which lies at the crossroads of lattice theory, computer science and data analysis, and which is now widely used for data mining and knowledge discovery. The suggested metric can reveal innovation patterns and thereby support rigorous prescriptions for innovation management.
Biography: Bernard Sinclair-Desgagné holds a PhD in Management science/Operations research from Yale University, and is a full professor at HEC Montréal’s Department of International Business. His main research areas are the economics of incentives and organization, environmental economics, and risk management. He is a fellow of the Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis of Organizations (CIRANO) and a member of its RTES research group. He is the Co-holder of the Chaire Electricité de France (EDF) on Sustainable Development – Ecole Polytechnique de Paris
